Pierce is a metamagic spell granting a Sorceror the ability to fire attack spells through obstacles that would otherwise interfere. The effect lasts until it has modified a certain number of projectiles.
The Pierce spell finds use in a number of applications, from deadly ambushes to surprise birthday parties. The latter use is heavily discouraged by the elder Sorcerors (who, incidentally, don't usually get invited to parties anyway).
